Gascia Ouzounian gave a guest lecture in the course ‘Thinking through Mediums’ run by Carl and Thomas of Studio Nav, who write:
‘we invite Gascia Ouzounian to discuss the role of SOUND as a medium for architectural thinking through Maryanne Amacher’s 'Sound Characters, Making The Third Ear'. This online talk is the last in a series of ten which run this Spring as part of the course and hypothetical exhibition 'THINKING THROUGH MEDIUMS' at the MA program in Curating at Stockholm University. The course examines the curation of architecture and is centered around its mediums - text, 1:1, architecture, furniture/object, pavilion, model, drawing, photo, performance and sound.’
Gascia’s writes:
Thank you @studio__nav for inviting me to contribute to your ‘Thinking through Mediums’ course with a lecture on sound as a medium for architectural thinking, emerging from the work of #MaryanneAmacher and moving outward from there!
It was a nice opportunity to reflect on Amacher’s ideas of using structure-borne sound as a compositional material; her work on ‘audjoined rooms’; her idea of ‘sonic telepresence’ and using sound to connect multiple, distant spaces, with the sound happening in one place influencing that in another… as well as her pioneering work in psychoacoustic composition and site-specific sound installation.
Amacher is certainly well know and widely celebrated, though perhaps still under-appreciated as a progenitor and innovator in these areas and in reconceptualizing and destabilising ideas of sound / space / body / architecture.
I was grateful for the truly excellent questions from the group, and to be able to think about these marvellous worlds and ideas Amacher brought to life.
