Shortwave Collective x Modern Art Oxford x EMPRES
May 25th 2023 / 6.30 - 10pm / Modern Art Oxford
SONCITES are pleased to present a collaborative project with Shortwave Collective and students at University of Oxford for exhibition on May 25th at Modern Art Oxford with EMPRES.
Shortwave Collective, an international feminist artist group who work with creative uses of radio, will lead a DIY radio making and urban listening workshop in April with Music and Fine Art students. With this new tool to access the electromagnetic spectrum, the students will compose a new sound work, and both the radios and the compositions will be exhibited at Modern Art Oxford in the EMPRES Art of Noises VIII late event.
During the event Gascia Ouzounian will be in conversation with the Shortwave Collective to discuss the project and their work.
This EMPRES event at Modern Art Oxford brings together sound works responding to the gallery’s solo show by artist Carey Young, which explores themes of power dynamics, relationships to space, text, feminism, and institutions of justice.
The DIY radios at the centre of this project are formed from radio recipes that the Shortwave Collective have created through their collaborative work. Named the Open Wave-Receiver, this listening device is open to receive simultaneous radio frequencies all at once, open in that it has an unfixed circuit with interchangeable components, and an open in terms of the co-learning and experimentation environments in which they are made and continue to develop. During the workshop the collective will lead the group on a listening experiment within Oxford’s city centre with the newly built radios, to incorporate urban fixtures (fences, barriers, bins) into the radio circuit, to listen through and within the structure of the city.
Tickets will be made available soon here, via Modern Art Oxford.
